Principal's Welcome

"We believe that BC educators have the capacity to pursue- and accomplish- a challenging goal. We want BC to the be the first jurisdiction in the world where every learner is able to walk the stage with dignity, purpose, and options. We are not naïve; we know this is an ambitious goal. We firmly believe that the collective pursuit of a HARD goal- Heartfelt, Animated, Required, and Difficult- is what is called for if we are to realize high equity and high quality education for all learners." -Judy Halbert and Linda Kaser

The words above reflect accurately the philosophy behind what we do at Crawford Bay Elementary- Secondary School. We work hard to ensure that the needs of individual students are met so that they may achieve their full potential and leave our school with quality options for life after secondary school. We look to the future and to our youngest students to align our school goals with what those students will need to be able know, understand, and do to contribute positively to the world as adults. We know that this will require perseverance, time, and a shared vision. It is a heartfelt and worthwhile endeavor.

Our programming reflects the diverse needs of our learners. We can see how their needs are changing over time, or shifting as populations shift. We offer programming to support student journeys towards success, and have a broad definition of what success means to different people. We are so very fortunate to have a giving, participative community partnering with us, and this helps to ensure that all of our students have a diverse range of opportunities to explore. Our focus on "engaging the local" through place-based learning; implementing Farm to School goals; integrating aboriginal perspectives across the curriculum; maintaining strong community connections; and providing a variety of programs allows us to provide high quality and equitable education for everyone. Welcome to Crawford Bay School!

Vision Statement

Crawford Bay Elementary-Secondary School is a rural K-12 school on Kootenay Lake, British Columbia, with approximately 75 students. As a community of learners, we aim to do the following:

  • Balance foundation skills development and prescribed learning outcomes with personal exploration and inquiry;
  • Engage our community and region in the learning process and school programming, with the classroom considered the 'base camp'; and
  • Evolve the ideas of supporting each student with a 'learner profile' and developing with each student a personal learning plan.
